Cookie care packages sent overseas through Scout/corporate collaborative
Last month, seven-year-old Lauren Schuman, a Girl Scout Daisy with Troop 14454 of Rockford, partnered with volunteers at Cargill's office in Wayzata to pack and ship special care packages.
With the help of 26 college students, she assembled approximately 70 care packages containing over 600 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and hundreds of magazines. These packages will help give men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan a taste of home and a reminder that although they are so many miles away, they are not forgotten.
As this year's cookie program approached its finale, Lauren asked family and friends to donate cookies to Cookie Care & Share, a donation program that provides cookies to 501c3 organizations. The "Care" donation was not the only thing they raised for troops - they also held a drive to collect magazines.
Lauren decided to ship the donated cookies to soldiers, but quickly realized how much it would cost to ship 600 boxes of cookies to Iraq. Lauren's mother, Robyn, who is a troop leader and a Cargill employee, helped spread the word about Lauren's idea to send cookies abroad. Cargill's Risk Management business unit generously agreed to finance the shipment of the cookie and magazine care packages to U.S. troops stationed overseas - all identified by Cargill employees as having local connections.
