Several Park Center High School students listen to Suraya Pakzad, a women's rights leader from Afghanistan, during a video conference in November. The school was one of only 14 in the world to participate in the conference.

Park Center High School students added to their knowledge of international affairs by speaking with a women's rights leader from Afghanistan Nov. 13.

The students, IB Diploma candidates, participated in a video conference with Suraya Pakzad. She was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2009.

Each participating school was invited to submit a question to Pakzad. Park Center students asked, "What specific things in Afghan culture hinder women's rights? What needs to change?"

Pakzad's answer relayed that the culture itself is beautiful and did not contribute to the issue. She said reinforced the importance of peace, about re-establishing women's rights to at least match if not surpass the degree they were honored before the Taliban dismissed them and her hope that young and future generations will help carry on this mission.

Student Kyle Dulgar was struck by the significance of the issue.

"Women were really powerless to leave abusive situations, and in order to receive justice for abuse or rape, the burden of proof rested on the woman," he said.

Student Awale Osman said he was impressed by Pakzad's grace and "willingness to put her life on the line for this cause."

Park Center High School, part of the Osseo School District, was one of only 14 schools in the world to participate in the event.

"It was unique to participate in the video conference and see the worldwide perspectives on this issue through the questions and interaction with kids from Canada and France," student Chris Heitzig said.
