A week after losing its first game of the season via a shutout, the Delano football team proved that wasn't going to happen two weeks in a row. The Tigers came out with guns blazing Friday night at homecoming with a 50-22 win over Mound-Westonka that was truly a team effort.
Six different players scored Delano's first six touchdowns as the Tigers rolled up big numbers offensively and play steady defensively.
"We were a little more focused that we were last week," Delano head coach Merrill Pavlovich said. "We actually were pretty flat to start. But in the second half we got things going. The offensive line took over for us and we played very well."
Mound-Westonka scored the game's first points to take a 8-0 lead, but the Tigers roared by with a three straight scores - on a pair of Matt Shaver TD passes of 23 yards to Jake Raskob and 20 yards to Justin Polak and a seven-yard scoring run by Alex Luedtke to take a 22-7 lead. After Mound-Westonka cut the deficit to 22-15 at halftime, the Tigers scored on all three of their possession in the third quarter to blow the game open, getting production from an unexpected source
"Justin Collins didn't have a rushing attempt until the third quarter," Pavlovich said. "He's been playing mostly on defense, but we decided to change things up. He had 12 carries in the second half and gained 121 yards."
Delano has more than 500 yards of total offense and got second half scoring runs of 15 yards from Collins, 10 yards from Jake Gleason, one yard from Will Finn and 13 yards from Polak.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-1 in the Wright County Conference and 4-1 overall. Next up will be perennial conference power Glencoe-Silver Lake at Glencoe. Both teams are 3-1 in the conference and G-SL is coming off a 34-14 win over Annandale Friday.
"Glencoe is always tough," Pavlovich said. "We'll have to play a good game to beat them, but the way the guys played in the second half if they bring that Friday, we'll have a good chance."
